3 Ways Feeling Gross Helps You Feel Good About Yourself
You know what I’m talking about, right? You feel sluggish, you feel like you have to squish your thighs and hips into your jeans (sausage time), your eyes look saggy and sleepy, and you have more acne and weird skin things popping up in unusual places on your body.
You feel gross.
How in the world does this feeling help you feel good?
1. Contrast – the cool thing about feeling gross is that you begin to conjure up mental memories of when you felt great (or would imagine feeling great for the first time). You think of your eyes being bright, strong legs, smooth skin, and energy to meet all the demands of the day.
The gift in feeling gross is that it provides the contrast to who you really are and want to be. It is a tuning fork aligning you to the place you want to go.
2. Invokes Desire – This contrast from where you are and where you want to be stirs up many feelings and judgments. Unfortunately many things that surface are negative like feelings of defeat, self-hatred, and even deep lies about the quality of human life that you are.
“I’m so freakin’ ugly”
“I’m so fat and disgusting…no one would ever find me attractive”
“I’m such a weakling”
But deep down as you sift through those painful feelings and messages, what you will notice is a deeper impulse of DESIRE. You are tapping into what you want.
“I want to feel beautiful!”
“I want to feel energized!”
“Ugh…I just want it to be easy and look and feel great ALL THE TIME!”
If you can shift the negative feelings and labels of judgment about what’s currently going on to what you wish was going on…you begin to tap into the ache. And what is aching? It is deep desiring. Pain and pleasure are so similar in physical sensation. When your ache arises and it feels painful, look for the dimension of pleasure in this. This pleasure-filled dimension of your ache is the place to reside and from which to act.
3. Feeling gross shows the way forward (most of the time) – When you can sit in that deep desire for more energy, more strength, more beauty, more life, more whatever…you start to ask, ”What can I do?”
Action emerges.
Transformation begins.
Next time you feel gross, please try this at home:
Write down what you feel gross about.
What is this showing you that you do want?
Write down all the messages/feelings that come up for you.
Look closely…what are you desiring…what is it you want?
Flesh out the desire….you want what? Why? What would it provide for you?
